Winter Sunset

WINTER SUNSET is based upon the idea of sound designs consisting of choral chord "clusters."  The "clusters" grow out of two scales that are not related to the major/minor system-- an eight-tone scale and the whole tone scale.

In this composition it is the choral or vocal "color" of the sound that is important, not the message of the text.

Giants in the Earth

The title of this composition was derived from the gripping novel, written in 1927 by Ole Edvart Rolvaag, that realistically portrayed the lives of Norwegian immigrant farmers in southeastern South Dakota during the late 19th century. The music was written at the request of Mr. Clinton Peterson, award winning music educator and band director from Tracy, Minnesota.

Montage for Concert Band

Montage is based upon two ideas, one melodic and the other harmonic. The introduction opens with a fanfare-like figure in trombones and horns followed by a choral treatment of the melodic idea. Beginning at measure 20, this idea is treated seriously between two voices with the harmonic idea interspersed.

SINFONIA

"SINFONIA, an intense work filled with interesting challenges for both the conductor and the orchestra, contains enigmatic melodies that twist and turn like a prism casting new and changing shades of melodic color on the tonal landscape.  Harmonically, the biting dissonances are both seductive and trenchant."

SYMPHONY No. THREE

Symphony No. Three was not "programmatic" when originally conceived.

The title, Scenarios Medieval with subtitles for the three movements, Grand Entrance, Daybreak (pastoral scene a dawn) and Rustic Dance were added after some listeners, upon hearing the Howard Hanson reading of the composition with the Rochester (NY) Philharmonic, conjectured about the images that came to mind.

The first movement was composed in the conventional first movement form: an exposition of thematic materials, a development section in which the themes are developed and varied, and a recapitulation of the opening materials. The second movement is an introspective slower movement that is followed by a boisterous double fugue as the third and final movement.

The Throne of Jehovah

An organ chorale is a contrapuntal composition based upon a chorale melody. The melody that serves as the basis for THE THRONE OF JEHOVAH was created by Donald Johnston. The type of construction for this organ chorale would be classified as a cantus-firmus chorale in which the melody recurs throughout the organ piece. After the organ has completed the prelude, the chorus presents the theme while the organ continues to decorate the chorale with figures from the prelude. Upon completion of the chorale by the chorus, the organ presents a coda derived from the prelude.

Time and Space Studies in Three Aspects

TIME AND SPACE STUDIES is an exploration of a number of sound design possibilities in music's two basic dimensions, time and space. While space is represented by the vertical construction in music, time is the vertical or linear flow. (A third dimension, intensity, except for a portion of the third section of the work, is explored to no more degree than the normal loud/soft relationship found in any work.)

The first section, (Aspect I, With Zest), deals with an intense rhythmic theme introduced at the beginning as a timpani solo. This theme is subject to treatment by all choirs of the orchestra.

In the slower second section (Aspect II, Relaxed), the music forms a marked contrast with the first section through the presentation of lush harmonies and crosscurrents of the basic musical ideas, producing bi-tonal textures.

Introducing the third section ( Aspect III, Frenetic), a frantic timpani solo sets the scene for metric distortions tossed throughout the choirs of the orchestra. Marked by unusual and virtually ceaseless intensity, the work drives constantly toward the final measures as if seeking release from torment.

This diminutive symphony displays all the orchestral choirs in an examination of the different spatial aspects of music.

Donald O Johnston (b.1929)
Link:

Donald O. Johnston was born in 1929 in Tracy, Minnesota. He attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and has composed choral works, orchestral works (including six symphonies), an opera, chamber music, and pieces for band. His music is the proof of the viability of the neo-romantic tradition established by his mentor, Howard Hanson. The logical, well-balanced formal construction; the piquant harmonies; the striking rhythmic constructions -- all of these have an immediate appeal for audiences.

Johnston's compositional style consists of a strongly tertian harmonic vocabulary with bitonal implications. Open fifths frequently appear in strong rhythmic positions. His metrical schemes often contrast "white note" with "black note" meters. Rhythmic constructions are frequently spiced with intricate cross rhythms.

Johnston saw military service in Korea, serving with the 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. In addition to composing music for the official march and marching song for the 45th Division, he created special concert music for the concert band and the Thurderbird "Dance" Band which assisted in USO shows

Johnston's post-war compositions have appeared in a number of publishers' catalogs including Summy-Birchard Co., Bourne Co., G. Schirmer, Elkan-Vogel, Boston Music Corp., Harold Flammer, Edwin F. Kalmus & Co., Rochester Music Publishers, Theodore Presser, Edward B. Marks Music Corp., Warner Brothers, Masters Music Publications, Inc., Shawnee Press, and Ludwig Publishing Company. Johnston conducted his composition studies under Philip Warner, Robert Mills Delaney, Bernard Rogers, and Howard Hanson.

Johnston taught at the College of Idaho (1954-55) in Caldwell, Idaho, Ripon College (1955-58) in Ripon, Wisconsin, and The University of Montana (1960-1993), in Missoula, Montana, where he held the position of Composer-in-Residence and Professor of Composition. Johnston is the founder of Ars Nova Press, Inc., a publishing house dedicated to promoting the musical compositions of skilled modern classical composers.
